The main power driving the barge is the combined pull of the mainsail and topsail, seen here.
It's clearly visible how the mainsail is supported by the sprit (pronounced "spreet"), the big diagonal spar whose shape can be seen through the sail in this picture. The top of the sprit is also where the topsail sheet comes to.
