They're sitting on the forward edge of the main hatch, facing the bows, with the mainsail above their heads. In front of them, is the foot of the main mast with some of the running rigging that works the sails. Behind them are the shrouds and dead-eyes, parts of the standing rigging which braces the masts in position.
