Crab winch

Working the crab-winch

Martin working the crab-winch to raise the starboard leeboard.

The crab winches (one each side) operate the leeboards, whose function is to project deep into the water below the barge's bottom and to act as a brake to stop it slipping sideways through the water, rather like the keel of a yacht, but on one side at a time.
