In the Colne

One of several Essex Smacks that were sailing in the vicinity while we were anchored in the Colne. These are the traditional fishing vessels of this part of the coast.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the men of these fishing smacks who formed the crews of the giant racing yachts sailed by people like Edward VII and the Kaiser.
