Northmoor weir

This is one of the few surviving paddle and rymer weirs, of a design that goes back to medieval times. The rymers are the heavy square uprights and the paddles are the light-handled ones between them that are shaped a bit like cricket bats (see a later picture). Both rest against a cill on the bottom of the river and a beam at the top level by the footway.
