Monkey Marsh lock, ThatchamThe built-up sections at the ends of the Kennet locks were originally built in wood and did not stand up to use. When the canal company bought the navigation, they rebuilt the locks (smaller) with the end structures in brick. I guess the timbers we can see now are cladding a concrete structure. As originally restored, the lock was rather overpowered by excessive safety walkways (see here), which have since been reduced. |
