Hawkesbury JunctionThe junction between the Oxford and Coventry Canals was the subject of much dispute between the two companies, each wishing to maximise the length over which they could charge tolls. The first junction made was Longford, whence he two canals ran parallel and close together for about a mile. Later the junction was moved to Hawkesbury, eliminating this duplication. This shot is from the Oxford Canal. Hawkesbury stop lock is out of shot on the right and the former line to Longford used to be on the left. The fine roving bridge (labelled Britannia Foundry Derby 1837) crosses the actual junction with the Coventry. |
