New River intake house

The New River was built in 1609-13 to bring fresh water into London from springs at Amwell and Chadwell, These springs proved insufficient, and an intake from the Lee was built near Ware. The building here is the intake house, which contains an ingenious floating weir which allows the same amount of water to enter the New River whatever the level of water in the Lee.
