In Wigan locks
At this lock the road bridge (later than the lock, I guess) is so close to the lock that there is no room for conventional balance beams on the bottom gates. So the gates are operated by a toothed quadrant whose winding gear is shown here. Wendy is winndgin a bottom gate paddle
