On the Wednesbury Old Canal

This was originally the Wednesbury Branch of the Birmingham Canal which started at the top of Spon Lane locks and ran to the Wednesbury coalfield. This connection was so important to the business community of Birmingham that the branch was completed well before the main line to Wolverhampton and the Staffs & Worcs. Part of the Wednesbury Branch, from Bromford Junction (at the foot of Spon Lane Locks) to Pudding Green Junction, was later widened to become part of Telford's New Main Line.
