Foxton junction

In the centre of the picture is Foxton bottom lock, the beginning of the (Old) Grand Union Canal. Here it makes a junction with the older Leicester and Northamptonshire Union Canal, planned as a broad canal to connect Leicester to Northampton, but only built from Leicester to Market Harborough. Both canals were taken over by the Grand Junction Canal in the 1890s to save them from bankruptcy. In 1930 they became part of the amalgamation that formed the Grand Union Canal as we know it today.
