Carpenters Road Lock

This was built as part of the flood prevention works in the 1930s. On one side of (seen here) is the Old River Lea which was semi-tidal at the time of this picture but is now non-tidal. On the other side of the lock is the Waterworks River, which has been fully tidal for some decades since the demolition of Prescott Sluice, but which may become non-tidal (but at a different level from the Old River Lea) if BW's current (2006) plans come to fruition. The lock is an interesting one with rising sector gates at both ends. It is currently (2006) derelict but with good prospects for its restoration.
This location will, for a few years, be under a fairly high-level "land bridge" connecting the new Olympic Stadium of the Olympic Village at Stratford International railway station.
