These rope-operated gates were once normal on the Lee and Stort. At the time of this trip, quite a few locks still had them.
They were later phased out, and these at Rammey Marsh were the last to go, when the gates were fitted with powered hydraulic operation just before the 1994 "National" at Waltham Abbey.
