This hydraulic gate-paddle gear was installed on many locks in the 1970s and 80s, on the grounds that it took less effort to work. Unfortunately it was impossible to close it in a hurry in case of emergency, and it proved difficult to maintain because it had to go back to the workshop if anything went wrong. Much of it has now been replaced with more traditional kit.
