Richmond footbridge
The footbridge is on top of the structure controlling the half-tide weirs. It is seen here during its Centenary celebrations in 1994. During these celebrations, (on a pouring wet day!) it was re-opened, after a refurbishment, by the Duke of York, whose predecessor of the same title had performed the original opening ceremony for the weirs, lock and the footbridge.
The purpose of the weirs is to maintain a good navigable level of water from here up to Teddington at low tide. When the weirs are closed, passage is possible via the lock, for which a toll is charged.
