Victoria Park

Victoria Park

London's oldest municipal park was given to the Local Authority by Queen Victoria. The land had been Crown property ever since the reign of Elizabeth I, when its owner, Bishop Bonner, died in prison. He was Bishop of London in Henry VIII's reign and had been in and out of prison in successive reigns. The park is bounded on one side by the Regent's Canal and on another by the Hertford Union. This shot shows part of its Regent's Canal frontage, above Old Ford Lock. The bridge is Bonner Hall Bridge, the original formal entrance to the park, which bears the Royal cypher VR.
