Pirate Club

The Pirate Club

A canal-based club for young people, founded here, close to the top of the Camden flight of three locks, by the late Lord St David's in the 1960s. Their original HQ was aboard a converted Thames lighter moored here, and they raised the funds for a permanent building by boarding passing boats and rattling collecting tins, hence calling themselves the Pirate Club. The architect of the Pirate Castle building was Colonel Richard Seiffert, who also designed the Centre Point Building. The matching building across the canal is a pumping station for the coolant for the high-voltage cables under the towpath.
