Hampstead Road Locks

Hampstead Road locks

"Camden Lock" is the popular name for this area and its market, but the proper name for this pair of locks at the top of the Camden flight is "Hampstead Road". Of all the pairs of locks on the Regent's, this is the only one at which both locks have been retained in use. The canal company experimented with a caisson lock here which would have saved water, but the design was not successful and a pair of conventional locks was substituted.
