The replacement mile-post 82, sponsored by Hillingdon Canal Club and installed to mark the bicentenary of completion of the first section of the Grand Junction from Brentford to Uxbridge in 1794.
When the Grand Junction was built, construction started simultaneously at the two ends. At the southern end there was a determination to reach Uxbridge as soon as possible, since once the canal reached there, it would be able to carry some trade and earn revenue. The Brentford to Uxbridge stretch was completed in a year.
