At about 11 ft, this is the deepest lock on the Grand Union. Immediately above it, the canal is on a short aqueduct over Fray's River. It was built that way in order not to affect the water supplies to mills further down the river, which is why the lock is so deep.
The lock cottage is the home of Roger & Fran Wakeham. Roger is a boat engineer (that's his work-boat moored on the left) and Fran runs a tea-room here
