The Canary Wharf development stands in the middle of the West India Docks. When the working life of the docks was over, they were handed over to the London Docklands Development Corporation. When LDDC had finished its planned life, the waterspace of the part of Docklands on the Isle of Dogs (the Millwall and West India Docks) was taken over by British Waterways.
