MORE CLOSURES AND AN ATTEMPT AT REVIVAL
Decline continued.. The Thames and Severn became disused and was
later to be abandoned. A number of river navigations, canal branches and the
remaining part of the Grand Western Canal were all lost in this decade.
In an attempt to survive by rationalisation, the companies
controlling the direct route between London and Birmingham amalgamated at the
end of this decade to form the Grand Union Canal Company. The (old) Grand Union
Canal and the Leics & Northants Union Canal were already owned by the Grand
Junction, so became part of the new conglomerate. |
