One of the points that perhaps could be made is that the
waterways are 'open space' within cities, gets people outside in the fresh air
boating, walking, running, fishing etc. All new developments have to provide
'open space' .
The canals are also a major tourist attraction bringing in
foreign currency as well as a home tourist attraction. The canal system and
canal holidays are a huge attraction as well as a great chance to meet people
whilst going through locks etc. I have met lots of friendly people in this way
and many from foreign shores.
With the government pushing a 'healthy ' lifestyle and being
concerned about people getting 'fat' surely the canals are an ideal facility.
Canal lovers have put a lot of voluntary time into restoring canals together
with fund raising / grants etc. Is all of this going to be WASTED? Although
living in Kent I will be contacting my MP .....I should also add that until I
retired I was a farm manager and that some farmers have been nearly driven to
bankruptcy by the 'mary' that was made over the RPA.
Best of luck with the campaign.
