GOVERNMENT FUNDING CUTS COULD AFFECT CANALS AND WATERWAYS
IN LEICESTERSHIRE - a protest is being planned for the weekend.
INTERVIEW: IAN MacDONALD, INLAND WATERWAYS ASSOCIATION - we are not aware of
how it will affect us locally but the cuts could put the entire canal network
at risk. Only about three per cent of waterways users pay towards them. We have
the problem of floating pennywort, which is in the water and clogs things up.
It is a big danger and there would be no funding to get rid of it.

CAMPAIGNERS PROTEST AGAINST FUNDING CUTS -
STUDIO INTERVIEW: PETER CASWELL, INLAND WATERWAYS ASSOCIATION - the funding
comes from DEFRA which allocates it to British Waterways and to the Environment
Agency to look asfter the canals and rivers. British Waterways gets around
55,000 million pounds, which sounds a lot but is not. Some 2,0000 miles of
water needs looking after. It takes a lot of upkeep to keep it in good
condition. Lots of volunteers work at keeping canals clean as well.

CANALS CONCERNS - Save our Waterways
Campaign is holding a series of protests amid fears many canals could fall into
disrepair because of funding cuts. STUDIO INTERVIEW: ROGER SQUIRE, VICE
CHAIRMAN, INLAND WATERWAYS ASSOCIATION - the Department for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs has turned the tap off. They've completely mismanaged their
funds. They've been fined 300m pounds from the European Union because they
haven't made their payments to farmers on time and the effect is they've taken
7.1m pounds out of the Waterways budget used for maintenance. The Chelmer and
Blackwater is independent, and is a member of the Association of Inland
Navigation Authorities and invariably if there is problem it would go to
British Waterways or the Environment Agency. Now because of the DEFRA cuts the
Chairman has been given early retirement. The boaters already fund a large
share. The petition is to DEFRA and you can sign it online. We'll be at
Paddington Station and Camden Lock.
