WARNING ROCHDALE CANAL MAY NEVER BE FULLY RESTORED -
a warning has been issued that the Rochdale Canal may never be fully restored
because of budget cuts. British Waterways is losing seven million pounds of
government funding.
PAUL ROWEN MP - work that will cost more than ten
million pounds is still outstanding. It needs to be done to bring the canal
back fully into use.

PLANS TO CUT MONEY SPENT ON MAINTAINING NORTH
STAFFORDSHIRE CANALS - the Labour MP for the Staffordshire Moorlands has
said that the Caldon Canal could be destroyed by cuts in funding.
CHARLOTTE ATKINS MP - in the early 1960s the canal
was in a derelict state. Volunteers put in hours of work and there was lots of
fundraising to get it back into operation.

WATERWAYS FUNDING FEARS - major funding cuts to
British Waterways have meant that 180 jobs have been lost in recent months
alone.
