CUTS - INTERVIEW: DAVID PEARCE, SAINT PANCRAS CRUSING CLUB - the
grant to the Environment Agency and the British Waterways has been cut. We are
concerned that all we have worked for is to suffer. We want Barry Gardiner, the
Environment Minister, to take notice. The vast majority of people who use the
waterways use the towpaths. We were in the Royal Docks for the London Boat Show
yesterday. We are now in West India Docks.

Hundreds of job losses and lost revenue are feared by the people who work on
our water network as the government is cutting grants to British Waterways.
STUDIO INTERVIEW: DENISE RUDD, BRUCE CHARITABLE TRUST, HUNGERFORD -
my concern is that the canal had 29m pounds spent on it. Last year, lock gates
were damaged because they were crumbling. The government has funded the
waterways for the last 50 years, but now it is the boaters that are being asked
to fund the canals.

CANALS PROTEST - a flotilla of boats is to sail by
the Houses of Parliament in protest about DEFRA cuts affecting the canal
system. INTERVIEW: ROGER SQUIRES, INLAND WATERWAYS ASSOCIATION -
there are 119m pounds' worth of significant arrears in repair work. This
winter, maintenance worth 4.5m pounds has been stopped. Farming fields could be
flooded if an embankment breaches. This happened in Rochdale two years ago. The
canal was closed and it cost 1.2m pounds to repair. Our boats will carry
protest banners. MPs should realise that we are absolutely committed.
