when I'm feeling formal.)
Born October 1942
Married to Wendy since 1967 --

Lives in South London |
I was born (in 1942) and brought up in
Marlborough, Wiltshire ( right, pictured in 1979), of parents who had moved
there from London in the 1930s. I moved away from Marlborough to go up to
University, but was still in contact with the town until recently , as my
father lived there until his death (aged 91) in March 2002.
I read Mathematics at what was then Queen Mary College of
the University of London (Now Queen Mary University, London) . After my first
degree I stayed on to do research and gain a Ph.D. in Algebra. It was during my
postgraduate years that Wendy and I married, having been at school and
University together. I was active within the Students Union, and twice a
delegate to NUS Conference, the second time as my College delegation's leader.
This must have paved the way for my later Trade Union involvement of 23 years
as an active member (many of them in elected local office, followed by 12 years
as a paid official. (See here).
My wife, Wendy, was born and brought up
in Highworth, about 18 miles north of Marlborough, on the far side of Swindon.
Her father, Jim Knapp, was a partner in a family firm of builders and
undertakers. She came to Marlborough to school as a week-day boarder and went
on to Queen Mary College to read English. A few years later she returned to the
College to do some research in 18th Century literature. The photo left shows
the family group at our wedding in 1967. On the left are Wendy's parents, on
the right my parents and my brother, Derek, who now lives in the USA.
